Do I Owe Tax? is a small, independent tool built by Fishlight Ltd. It exists because the rules around selling on Vinted, eBay, Etsy and Depop changed in a way that left a lot of ordinary sellers unsure where they stood — reporting rules for platforms are not the same thing as tax rules for people, and the two get mixed up constantly. We built a two-minute checker that asks the same questions HMRC's own guidance is actually based on, and gives you a specific, honest answer rather than a vague "it depends".

We're not a tax firm, an accountancy practice, or affiliated with HMRC in any way. We're a small team who wanted a straight answer for ourselves and couldn't easily find one, so we built it, checked every rule and figure against GOV.UK, and made it free to use. Where a rule has been announced but not yet given a start date, we leave it out rather than guess — the 2027–28 tax year isn't offered in the checker for exactly that reason. If your situation is genuinely complicated — a proper business, significant amounts of money, or anything you're still unsure about after using the checker — a qualified accountant is always the right next step, and we'll tell you so honestly rather than pretending this tool replaces one.
