Who you're dealing with

Do I Owe Tax? is operated by Fishlight Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales under company number 04418521, whose registered office is 20-22 Wenlock Road, London, England, N1 7GU. You can reach us at hello@doiowetax.co.uk, and we answer everything that arrives there.

By using the checker or buying the report, you're agreeing to what follows. If you don't agree with it, please don't use the site.

This is guidance, not advice

Do I Owe Tax? is an information tool. It reads the answers you give it, applies published HMRC rules, and tells you what those rules say about a situation like yours. That is not the same as tax advice: we're not a firm of accountants or tax advisers, we're not regulated to advise, we don't know anything about you beyond what you typed in, and nobody here has looked at your situation personally.

We're not affiliated with HMRC, and nothing here is an official HMRC statement. If a decision matters — real money, a deadline you might miss, anything you're still unsure about after reading — speak to a qualified accountant or tax adviser, or contact HMRC directly. Filing correctly and on time is always your own responsibility.

Accuracy, and what can go wrong

We check every rule and figure against GOV.UK and cite what we checked. Even so: tax rules change, announcements get superseded, and the answer depends entirely on the accuracy of what you typed in. We don't promise the site is free of errors, and we don't promise it will always be available.

Estimates are estimates. Where the checker doesn't have a figure it needs — what you originally paid for something, exactly how much other income you have — it says so and works from a stated assumption. Your real numbers will move the answer.

The paid report

The £24 report is sold through Lemon Squeezy, who handle payment and are the merchant of record for the transaction. It is a one-off purchase covering one check, not a subscription and not an ongoing service. Our refund policy is 14 days, no questions asked.

Limitation of liability

Because this is guidance rather than advice, you act on it at your own discretion. Fishlight Ltd is not liable for any tax, interest, penalty or other loss arising from a decision you take, or don't take, on the strength of anything on this site — including any loss of profit, loss of business or indirect or consequential loss.

Where we are liable to you, and to the extent the law allows us to limit that liability, our total liability is limited to the amount you paid us, which for the report is £24 and for the free checker is nothing.

Nothing here excludes or limits liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for anything else that can't lawfully be excluded. If you're a consumer, your statutory rights are unaffected by any of this.

Your data

The answers you give the checker stay in your own browser unless you ask us to email your report. Even then, the small server we use to send it keeps nothing itself — no database, no log — though if you leave the mailing-list box ticked when you do, your address is kept on a list we hold with our email provider until you unsubscribe. The privacy page sets out exactly what does and doesn't leave your device, and what we and our providers do with it if you do ask for the report by email.

Changes, and the law that applies

We may update these terms as the site changes; the version on this page at the time you use the site is the one that applies. These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction over any dispute — though if you're a consumer resident elsewhere in the UK, you keep the protection of your local law and courts.
